Glen Lyon is a very early summer-fruiting raspberry variety, making it a great choice if you want to start picking raspberries as early as possible in the season. It produces attractive red berries on vigorous canes and is particularly useful when grown alongside mid and late-season varieties to extend the overall raspberry harvest.

The plants are hardy and well suited to UK growing conditions. Glen Lyon fruits on the previous year’s canes, so once the crop has finished, the old fruited canes should be cut back to ground level while the fresh new canes are retained for the following year.

Glen Lyon also has some resistance to raspberry spur blight, making it a useful and dependable early variety for gardens and allotments.

Glen Lyon is one of the varieties I’d choose mainly for its timing. It gets the raspberry season started early and works really well as part of a mixed planting with varieties such as Glen Ample and Autumn Bliss, so you can keep picking fruit for much longer.
